Q-Cells develops solar cell with 19.5% efficiency rating

Q-Cells SE has achieved an efficiency rating of 19.5% on a 243 cm2 polycrystalline solar photovoltaic (PV) cell.

The solar PV cell is based on Q-Cell’s Q.ANTUM cell concept.

Technical data of the solar PV cell:

  • Efficiency rating: 19.5%
  • Open circuit voltage: 652 mV
  • Short-circuit current density: 39.0 mA/cm²
  • Fill factor: 76.7%
  • Cell area: 243 cm²

“The new world record is proofing Q-Cells' leading position in the crystalline solar cells market. We have already managed to significantly improve the cell efficiency rating thanks to our new cell concept Q.ANTUM, and we will further optimise this technology to achieve efficiencies of more than 20%,” says Peter Waver, Senior Vice President Technology with Q-Cells SE.

A polycrystalline, 180 µm thick silicon wafer was metallised and passivated with functional nano-layers on the back side. The structure for the back side, consisting of dielectric layers combined with local contacts, is said to improve the solar PV cell's optical and electrical characteristics and significantly boosts output as compared to the previous standard technology, which uses a completely aluminium-metallised rear.
