Risø completes wind resource mapping in China

Having spent four years mapping the wind resources of the Dongbei region, China, Risø DTU hopes the results will lead to the planning of productive wind farms.

The work has been carried out within the framework of theSino-Danish Wind Energy Development Programme which aims share Danish experiences in incorporating a large share of wind power into the grid, to China.

Chinese authorities will be provided with methods for using wind data, as well as the calculations needed to evaluate wind resources, which would lead to the optimum siting of wind turbines in Dongbei.

Since starting the wind resource mapping project in December 2007 two methods of charting wind resources have been used by Risø:

  • Model-based mapping: The wind resources were mapped for 5 x 5 km tracts of land by means of mesoscale models. The resolution of the mesoscale models enables modelling for areas of between 5 and 500 km. This provides an overall picture of the wind resources. The calculations were made using the Karlsruhe Atmospheric Mesoscale Model (KAMM). These calculations can be included directly in subsequent microscale calculations. Microscale modelling is used for land areas from 10 to 5000 m with a resolution which can be used for the siting of wind turbines. This combination of mesoscale and microscale modelling has been developed by Risø and provides detailed knowledge about wind conditions; and
  • Specific measurements for verifying model calculations: For the purpose of carrying out specific measurements of the wind conditions in Dongbei, 12, 70 m meteorological masts were erected, and measurements were then made for a whole year. Both wind speeds and turbulence were measured at heights of 10, 30, 50 and 70 m above ground. Moreover, the wind direction was measured at 30 and 70 m above ground. Finally, the masts were used to measure temperature, humidity, changes in temperature and air pressure.

By utilising these methods the measurements generated paint a reliable picture of the wind conditions over a 12 month period at each of the 12 sites. The results will thus make it possible to prepare and implement wind power projects in the area.
