In a time when solar PV is characterised as being a prohibitively expensive alternative form of energy (subsidies notwithstanding) one application area that could make a real difference to perceptions is BIPV (Building Integrated PV). This application can effectively enable building owners to save on construction costs of new buildings while at the same time generate a portion of their own electricity. Further progress requires a high level of innovation to truly bring solar PV into buildings, while making the technology even more affordable. Fortunately, there are signs that such inventiveness is now making a difference.

Johanna Solar Technology becomes Bosch Solar CISTech

31 August 2010

Johanna Solar Technology GmbH is changing its name to Bosch Solar CISTech GmbH as part of its integration into the Bosch Group's Solar Energy Division.

The Bosch Group entered the photovoltaics industry in 2008, when it acquired the Erfurt-based ersol group, now known as Bosch Solar Energy AG. It further expanded its solar photovoltaics (PV) operations in 2009 when securing majority stakes in Johanna Solar Technology GmbH and aleo solar AG, based in Oldenburg and Prenzlau, Germany.

Bosch Solar CISTech is a developer and manufacturer of thin-film solar modules based on copper, indium, gallium, sulphur and selenium (CIS/CIGSSe).

In the first expansion stage, the nominal capacity of the production plant in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany, is 30 MW.
