GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, UK, October 2, 2008. The proposed investment package for marine energy and other renewables from the Scottish Government have been welcomed by the trade body Scottish Renewables.
The Scottish Government’s consultation on changes to the Renewables Obligation proposes new levels of finance for different types of renewable energy development in Scotland.
It compels electricity suppliers to ensure that a rising portion of electricity comes from eligible renewable facilities. In return, generators will receive a Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) for every MWh pf power produced, which can then be sold to electricity suppliers.
Under the proposed changes, however, wave power will attract five ROCs for every MWh produced, with tidal devices getting three ROCs. More mature technologies like onshore wind and hydro would continue to receive one ROC for every MWh.
Jason Ormiston, Chief Executive Officer at Scottish Renewables says: “We welcome the continued Scottish Government support for emerging technologies especially marine, where we still have a world lead, however we are still not convinced the difference in support levels for wave and tidal is justified and we will consider this element very carefully.”
